A local affiliate of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, the program matches young people who need a friend with an adult volunteer. The youth are referred by teachers, counselors, the court, relatives or themselves. Visit the web site at: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greensboro

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Community program establishes a one-on-one mentoring relationship with children (6-13) from a single parent homes.
  • The match spends 2-4 hours a week together for a period of one year doing activities that improve the youths self-esteem.
  • Mentoring Children of Promise is the newest program at Big Brothers Big Sister. In this program we match a volunteer with a child who has an incarcerated parent.
  • Class Act program matches children in a school setting with role models. Together the pair works on classroom activities such as art projects. They eat lunch together or just hang out at the monkey bars. Big Brothers and Sisters work together with the children's teachers to arrange visit times. The program operates from September to April each school year.
  • Campus Sidekicks program matches middle school students with role models from area colleges. The youth visits the college campuses twice a month and spends time with their mentee.

President Bush Visits Youth Focus

Youth Focus has received since 2005, funds from the federal Health and Human Services Department to help fund a Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program. This program, a component of our Big Brothers Big Sisters program, serves young people who have an adult who is incarcerated by matching the young person with an adult role model. Our local program has served 147 children since its inception. Nationally the program has served over 100,000 children.

President Bush visits Youth FOCUS

In order to recognize this national mentoring program, on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 Youth Focus was honored by a visit to our agency by President George Bush. President Bush was accompanied by Jedd Medefind who serves as Special Assistant to the President and Acting Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. The visit took place at 11:00 AM at the Big Brothers Big Sisters offices at 510 Summit Ave. in Greensboro. The visit included a round table discussion of mentoring that included President Bush, Jedd Medefind, Chuck Hodierne, the Executive Director of Youth Focus and three “Bigs” in the program as well as three young people being served by the project.
