My Sister Susan's House
My Sister Susan’s House offers the same services as HEARTH: Transitional Living program, including counseling, vocational and educational training, independent living skills training, and other supports. However, this program is focused exclusively on the needs of pregnant or parenting youth ages 16-21. These young women, and their dependent children, live at My Sister Susan’s House for up to 18 months with all of their living expenses taken care of while they pursue goals that will allow them to live successfully on their own and provide the nurture and support their children need.
This unique, home-like facility located in Greensboro was born from an amazing collaboration between members of the community who were concerned about ensuring pregnant and parenting young moms have the supports they need during a critical stage of their lives. UNCG faculty and students designed and constructed the 4,400 square foot facility that provides a private “studio” style bedroom & bath for up to four young women and their children, as well as a private on-site apartment for the live-in house mom.
My Sister Susan’s House is a “green” building that meets national LEED standards. The City of Greensboro donated the land upon which this new facility was constructed and Guilford Technical Community College provided student labor to help with the construction. My Sister Susan’s House is a testimony to the power of collaboration.
